I always interpreted some cynism behind that smirk, like Nathaniel's thinking "typical pig-headed British." Nathaniel just told him "Your wounded should try walking back to Albany - they'll never make the passage north" as if to suggest this arrogant soldier should take the two women back to Albany as well. And so begins the immediate dislike that Nat. and Duncan have for each other.
