Hi, Joy! I love this moment, too! (Which moments DON'T I love??) And I agree with you that he would have spared her any unnecessary pain, which is why when she asks "Have you seen my father?" he replies only "From a distance" until he can take her aside and break it to her gently, and hold her to comfort her. BTW, I think Gretchen was just putting us on a bit when she gave her ghastly version! And a funny one it was, Gretchen!
