: : : I DO think Magua had a change of mind after killing Uncas, when he held his hand out to Alice, and at that point might have kept her alive.
: : It's worth noting that in the script it says that Magua is about to kill Alice, but the look in her eyes stops him. He then holds out his hand to her. On these grounds, I'd say that you've hit the nail on the head.
: As to Alice, Magua, and Uncas; Magua's face and hand gesture suggests a fleeting change of heart. The sensitivity didn't last but for a second. When Alice lets herself fall, Magua reacts with an "oh well" shrug and continues on his way.

I've never thought of Magua's reaction as "oh well" or "win some, lose some". He seems totally perplexed by Alice's suicide. For me, this scene exemplifies the idea that this was Alice's victory over her tormentor. She does something utterly alien to Magua, something he simply cannot understand. The expressions are fleeting, but I like to think there was even some admiration for her sacrifice in the moments after her leap. (Okay, I may be stretching that one, but we all see things with our own eyes. More reason to praise Wes Studi.)
