: I agree, Marcia, Mary and others.  There was nothing dishonest about Hawkeye, and that was undoubtedly one of the things Cora loved. He knew she was stout-hearted (one of the things he loved about her!), and this was a crisis that needed very quick, direct communication between the two.  And she later benefitted from knowing that, since they didn't off her at once, she and Alice would remain alive to trek to the Huron village, giving Hawkeye time to find and rescue them, as Marcia said.

: I also think the line served the practical purpose of informing the viewer.
