:: Yes, gunpowder can dry out and be used, but it would take a lot longer than that scene's time period. What I think would have happened in real life is that our heroes would have put caches of powder, shot, and other necessities nearby. This was a common practice among longhunters. Things have been found in very old trees even including rifle barrels and locks from hidden guns.
Remember they had gotten extra powder horns from both the dead at George Road and from Munro's stores.
It's posible they had already stashed the powder from George Road before entering the fort, and that's why they asked for more from Munro.
