I have no idea what happened to the Colonel. However, Mann invoked a bit of "poetic license" regarding the massacre. Historians state that the English had to surrender their arms before leaving the fort. While the movie makes it look as though the entire English retreat was destroyed, in fact, only about 200 people were killed and the rest captured.
