Yikes...you're right. He does say he will cover them "from the bastion." (though the script says from the "casement" and I don't know what the difference is, if there IS a difference.) Now I have to rethink Joy's position, too. I still say he couldn't have actually provided "gun" cover without attracting attention...maybe he intended to cover them by simply being sure they weren't spotted by the British as they left...providing a diversion himself, or something. If he had started shooting, it seems to me they would ALL have been caught & hanged. And so...if he did watch to be sure they escaped safely, perhaps he doesn't go in search of Cora until AFTER that. It doesn't seem likely that he went looking for her first, had their little interlude (some of us are still debating exactly how far that interlude went), stood sighing & gazing at the night, and then rushed back to help the colonists escape, all in an hour's time.
Help! I'm confused now, for sure.
