: While I would like to know what else they spoke of during the scene, I am glad they left it like they did in the final cut. I like the fact that we don't have to hear words to see that they have settled their future together at that point.

I agree completely. The way it is presented in the final cut, it's a very elegant scene, if you get my meaning.
It's just that I'd like to actually see and hear those words being spoken, see how they did it...my curiosity about all things LOM is boundless! (Wish I had a connection who would show me ALL the stuff that was edited out!)

Back to Chingachgook's soliloquey on the future of the frontier and people like Hawkeye: I think it would have cluttered up the scene. It was enough to say exactly what he did. In general, I liked the fact that they took out all the pontificating Chingachgook did in the original script...to me it would have felt very heavy-handed. The points they were trying to get across with that dialogue were made more eloquently throughout the film without words, or with the words they did choose to leave in.

Some of the intention of Chingachgook's omitted lines was accomplished with the sachem's little speech. The white man came and night entered with him -- yeah, exactly! Doesn't matter that it was spoken by a Huron instead of a Mohican...the experience was common to all the First Nations, and is one of the roots of the film.

And growing frontier hostility toward foreign interference is made abundantly clear in Hawkeye's simple two sentences: "I ain't your scout. And I sure ain't in no damn militia." Says it all, right?

I'd still like to see a director's cut with a tad more missing stuff thrown in. I have faith that Michael Mann could make it good, although it probably would differ in feel, albeit subtly, from our beloved first version. I guess I just want ... MORE!
