The script describes Alice's 'shutting down' much earlier than the cliff scene. If you watch her any time after they leave the fort, she's just numb to it all. After she and Cora are rescued at the massacre, Cora gets to her feet immediately, but Alice is sitting, doll-like, on the ground. Chingachgook has to drag her up and propel her forward.
