: : : : : What if Alice and Uncas had not shuffled off this mortal coil and they had indeed burst their respective bodices and declared their feelings that were nearly so obvious! Would such a relationship, in those times, have been allowed to continue and flourish? Would Cora and Chingachcook(Is that the right spelling?) have allowed it do you think? I vaguely remember a mini series or drama a while ago that dealt with this issue where a widowed settler had begun a relationship with a NA man and they were both dealt with fairly severely.

: : : I think Uncas and Alice, as the movie portrayed them, would have fared better than Cooper's Uncas would have(did that make any sense!).  Mann's Uncas seemed more accustomed to the white man's ways(since he went to the white man's school with Hawkeye)and that would have gone a long way in the adjustments both would have had to face.  As to Coopers's Uncas, he definitely was "a breed apart" and would have a tougher time "making sense" to Alice's English sensibilities("There he goes again! Bringing those smelly scalps in the cabin, after I just polished and cleaned it up proper!"). And also which world would the children live in, white or Native? Ideally, a pleasant mixture of both.  But that wasn't (isn't)always the case.

: : I don't know about the fair Alice but as for me i would have not objected to smelly scalps, skined animals, blood spots, washing his two shirts, respraying his chest tattoos (Have you seen that picture) brushing his hair ......wasn't there a song called "The Things That make You go Mmmm' those are them!!
