My favorite "Hawkeye Moment", to kick this off, is at Cameron's Cabin, after the massacre there. Hawkeye says to Cora, "Miss Munro ... They are not strangers ... And they stay as they lay!" Very powerful stuff when viewed in the context of the film.
I agree, Rich, that this is a wonderful "Hawkeye Moment." I love how his eyes seem to glisten with unshed tears, and the way he swallows before he can say, "...and they stay as they lay." Very moving. Also, I love the shot of the group moving up the slope, away from the cabin. There is something about the bewilderment on the faces of Duncan, Cora and Alice, as they follow obediently behind our hero & crew. And something touching in the way Cora walks with her arm protectively around Alice.
