Since I can't "gather" (see me kicking and screaming on the floor!) I shall discuss something else(see me quite composed again). Has anyone else seen the 1920's silent version of LOTM. I saw it a couple of weeks ago and it's a hoot. It follows the book more closely than our favorite version. Uncas is in the romantic lead, as he should be (sorry all you DDL fans)!! Cora is his lady. Heyward is attached to Alice. And there is an addition of a cowardly Brit soldier(I forget his name now), who is jealous of Cora's love for Uncas. This low-down skunk is the traitor who snitches to Montcalm about the fort's vulnerabilities and causes a surrender to come about. But he gets his in the end. During the massacre the Hurons invade the fort, throw a firebrand down into an underground gunpowder storage room (where our villian is hiding) and blows him to kingdom-come. Very good viewing with just a few disapointments. Uncas looks as old as his "father". And during the massacre as women, children and soldiers are being attacked left and right, Cora and Alice walk through the middle of it unscathed until Magua confronts them! Oh, also Hawkeye is kind of a secondary figure along with Chingachgook. It's worth a look. Now if I can only find the 1936 version!!
