I agree, Joy, LOM was mostly ignored by the Academy, much to my surprise. I had been sure it was going to get nominated for something major!
Stowe did a really good job, I agree. At that point in time I had never seen her in anything before. So she really became Cora for me. And when I compare with performances I've seen since then, I don't think any of them approach the depth of her performance in LOM.
I also thought Wes Studi should have been nominated for supporting actor. He played Magua with such intensity...he really got inside the character, and didn't just rely on his "bad-guy" looks. Russell Means also thought Studi deserved an award.
Cinematography....for heaven's sake, how good does something have to BE to get nominated?!!
Music: It did get the British "academy award" for best score (I heard). It should at least have been nominated here!
Michael Mann, in my opinion, is a cinematic genius. He not only directed this, but produced and worked on the screenplay! Besides, someone has to have a unifying vision of what the movie's going to BE in the end, and it's obvious to me that he pulled this together; and it is, to my mind, a masterpiece.
