Horse posting whisperers,

Mules were, prior to merely recreational riding, considered superior to horses, less skittish, more manageable, and were preferred by women for their temprament.

It could have been that the horse was worn out. Forage for horses in the woods was a big problem. Many traders had to abandon their horses for canoes because they were in a starving condition and worn out from carrying heavy loads. Bouquet found it a constant problem.
