Yes, it is based upon Longfellows' famous poem but history is interwoven in a very tasteful way. Hiawatha was filmed in 1997 in Montreal and parts of Alberta with an all star native cast ( Adam Beach, Gordon Tootoosis,Irene Bedard, Russell Means, Litefoot etc.)So far it is not available on video, but it was shown here in Canada on SUPERCHANNEL. Hallmark Entertainment was the production company. It is definitely worth watching.Mike Phillips was great as Mishe-Mokwa, Irene Bedard's character's Dad.
