This is great feedback - thanks! The French angle has occurred to me because I tried for a while to make some sense out of "Bumppo", which of course sounds like a typical Americanization of a European name. I tried all sorts of permutations of the syllables, too, with both French and German and came up blank. I've spent a fair amount of time speculating on various odd little aspects of these books, and most of the time, due to my own lack of knowledge, I come off looking like the "blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat that isn't there". Ayez patience, s'il vous plait. My French is lousy, too.
