I think it's more that he's English military through and through as is Munro. Munro wasn't keen on sending anyone outside the fort to help because the fort was under siege by the French. I think he felt his duty was to fight to hold the fort and use his own military to do so. Duncan felt the same way and he supported him. I think he thought (albiet wrongly) he could make Cora forget those events. Witness the scene where he comes to see her and tells her that when they are back in England away from all this, she will forget these events, but she eventually tells him she won't marry him. I think he thought military first and love second and that he could win her over in the end. Ha, typical.
