Uncas helps out

When the party is in the canoes, escaping the massacre, right after Hawkeye yells "head for the river!", Uncas goes overboard and gets into the other canoe, with Major Heyward and another British soldier. Exactly why does he do this? Because the canoe he's in is carrying too many? Or because he sees that they need help over there?? What? I've never been able to figure this out.
