I can tell you about what they used.....most likely smoke pots. Army uses them to generate smoke during river crossings etc that they want to obscure from the enemy. We used them often in training when I was with the combat engineers....and you are right! They are enough to make you gag. Description of the smell is pretty right on target. Use a lot of them and you get a think blanket of smoke. Use one or two with a breeze and you get a mist/fog effect. But smoke pots they were I betcha!
