Geez, I can't let this go unchallenged! Yes, Duncan & Uncas were both heroes willing to sacrifice their lives for the people they loved, but so was Hawkeye. He did, after all, walk into the Huron camp unarmed to do what he could to save Cora, Alice AND Duncan. He also volunteered to go to the stake to save Cora, and argued vehemently with Duncan..."I said TAKE ME!!" It certainly was not HIS fault he was spared & Duncan taken instead. Not to mention his bravery in each and every battle scene, and especially his long run to Cora's side during the massacre, culminating in his determined bashing of the Huron holding her under the knife. And let us not forget that Chingachgook fought valiantly at each and every battle, as well, and risked his life, also, in his final battle with Magua to avenge his son's death.
Sorry, I don't see any man's willingness to risk his life as being greater than any other's. I would say they were each heroic, brave, and self-sacrificing in every regard, and the only difference between Duncan, Uncas & Hawkeye is that Hawkeye survived!
