Bill,
I enjoyed your post. The movie with everyone standing stoiclly on deck as the ship sinks was the classic "A Night to Remember" with, I believe, Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck. The 1979 TV film "SOS Titanic" with David Warner, Cloris Leachman, David Jansen, Ian Holm, Susan St. James, and our own Maurice Roeves took a much more realistic look at the disaster. This movie was a staple of cable TV ten years ago but I have not seen it in a long time. It contained much of the panic and fear of the ships last moments but it had a limited budget compared with the current film (what film doesn't) and therefore could not go to the lengths of disaster the Cameron film does. SOS Titanic also was much more about the history of the disaster with a more detailed look at the events that became legend than the current Titanic which weaves the history into the fictional romance. Although the current film has no equal for emotional power or sheer spectacle among Titanic films; SOS Titanic is a very fine film and I hope some cable station will try and cash in on the current craze by screening it.
