Shatter the Illusion??

My mom gave me a copy of Cooper's Last of the Mohicans because she knows how much I love the movie. I didn't have the heart to tell her that they are quite different. So here's my dilemna: Do I shatter the illustrious illusion of Mohicans as portrayed by DDL et al and read the book, or hang on desperately to my dreamworld a la Hawkeye and Uncas hauling Ching in from the river??
In the meantime, I'm chomping at the bit to see "The Boxer"!
