I came across this at the Biography Magazine site, about how Daniel Day-Lewis got into the character of Hawkeye:
"Hawkeye, the frontiersman in The Last of the Mohicans, called for a 5000-calorie-a-day diet and a strict exercise program to bulk up his lanky six-foot, two-inch frame with 20 pounds of muscle. He also spent a month living in the woods of North Carolina, learning how to build canoes, start a fire with sticks, skin animals, and fire a flintlock rifle. Once filming started, he took the rifle everywhere ("When he went to the bathroom he'd have that gun with him," said costar Madeleine Stowe, who also suggested, "He's sort of not of this world, Daniel.") He stayed so in character he refused to smoke modern cigarettes and rolled his own."
I guess now we have a pretty good idea how he got that blackened fingernail we mentioned earlier (visible when he pushes the bushes back upon approach to Cameron Cabin massacre, and when he touches Cora through the bars of the stockade).
