Follow The River, with Eric Schweig, dealt with a lot of what you described. An interesting movie. It was based on a book by Alexander Thom (am I missing a name or an initial??), which in turn was based on actual events. (I'm told the film changed the ending entirely.)

I, too, find this subject fascinating.
