James Fenimore Cooper obliged us with a prequel and several sequels to "The Last of the Mohicans." "The Deerslayer" was a prequel with Hawkeye and Chingachgook as young men. (Remember in the novels and most movie versions Hawkeye and Chingachgook are around the same age.) "The Deerslayer" has been made for film on two occasions. The first is real low rent version from the 50's starring Forest Tucker as Hawkeye. The other was made in 1977 and was treated as a sequal to Last of the Mohicans not a prequel. Thus the film starts with Ned Romero's Chingachgook mourning over the grave of the dead Uncus.
Cooper's sequel to Last of the Mohicans was "The Pathfinder" which I have heard was made into a movie with Kevin Dillon as Hawkeye. Has anyone seen this yet?
Also I believe LOTM is a prequel itself to "The Pioneers", the first of the Leatherstocking novels.
Anyway Cooper left plenty of material from which to craft possible sequels or prequels. Personally, though, I would not care for a sequel to the 92 version. Sequels rarely equal the success of the original. Most are just second rate affairs that are made to cash in on a title rather than trying to develop its own characters and story. Also I don't believe a serious actor such as Daniel Day-Lewis would ever reprise a role of his for a sequel or a prequel. Therefore I do not expect nor do I want to see any shallow attempt to follow up on that great movie.
Would I be interested in seeing more films of this type? Very much so!
