Closed captioning may say "subtle" but that would have come from a script, and we already know the script can be wrong. To me, it makes no sense to think that a plain-spoken frontiersman like Hawkeye would even think to use the word "subtle." And "sudden-like" is funnier, and more appropriate. I still vote for it.
