Actually, I agree, Marcia! I don't know how I let my fast-talking son convince me otherwise! "Sudden-like" makes more sense and makes the line funnier.

Actually, now that I think about it, there are several Hawkeye lines that carry that marvelous, wry sense of humor: this one; the one Joy just mentioned (the "serious disagreement"); and when they enter the fort, Hawkeye responds "We just dropped in to see how you boys was doin'."

Can anyone think of any others??
