Maybe it's too late to say more about this, but I also think Hawkeye's smirk communicates something like "Oh, sure. Like you'll really make it all that way, given how you blundered into this!" ...And then he turns to those he respects for counsel. I do think Hawkeye thinks Duncan's comment is funny (not funny, ha-ha, but funny impossible).
