The mere fact that it DID happen, with all the knowledge Montcalm had at hand, suggests to me that he is not completely faultless here, good reputation not withstanding!
I have to admit he probably did see the writing on the wall, but I don't think he had the manpower to prevent the Indians from getting out of control. He admonished them not to do it then personally tried to stop it. His Canadians were not going to lose their life by protecting their old enemies the English and he didn't have enough French troops to protect all the prisoners. Idon't think he planned the massacre and I don't think he could have prevented it, I don't think anyone could. Even Sir William Johnson had trouble keeping his Mohawks and such under control under similer circumstances after the Battle of Lake George.
