Cutting off a lock of her hair would have been a mini-scalping, something for the Magua Conquest Scrapbook. He was content to try to shoot her earlier in the film. But now, he figures he can get big brownie points in Huron Land if he brings her in alive and lets the crew toast her like a big beautiful marshmallow.
