Yeah...I remember seeing Joe Greco or was it Joe Piazza's band play there at the pool ( lot's of fights between the freaks and greaser as they were called then?) and I think Tree also ( Arthur pre FTW, Bob Carapezza, and Pete Holtz ) played there. Finger was suppose to play there but when the Iggy thing hapenned at Holy Name Finger broke up and any band associtated with me got banned from playing anywhere? It would have been another riot anyway? |

Hello Dear Friends.
Hope you are all well. Sorry Richie, I had to re-register... My old info seemed to be invalid!
POOL Dances!! Yeah.... Tree, as I recall ... let's see ... um, Tree was Ben Daidone on bass? ... Absolutely A.J. Petillo on drums (AMAZING) and Peter on guitar? I remember a great rendition of Cat's Squirrel ... and an inspirational drum solo from AJ with steam rising from his neck! When I joined Tree ... it was Ben on guitar and Jeff Rubinstein on Bass ... nothing like the original ... sorry...
What completely blew my mind was Crystal Balloon! with Mario and Thomas ... Steve Nodo ... and Ticky (Joe) on drums... Never knew the lead singer. What an amazing band ... and the first time I went to the Nodo house in Green Acres ... it was like walking into a dream ... with the Marshall stacks and equipment everywhere ... but what an amazing band! I remember the big switch from Led Zeppelin to playing Fairport Convention and British/Celtic fold-rock. It changed my life! Thanks for having me! Then Gordon Inyard joined the band ... I started playing and hanging out with Mario ... those were wonderful days ...
The first time I played the pool (um...no one asked,Jeff) was with Barry and Rob Oswald and Kevin (the knotted wonder) in a band called Revolution. So very kind of them to let me play with them. They were wonderful people and a great band ... I really loved them. As I love ALL OF YOU!!
When I joined a band in Hicksville called Hilary (he goes on unphazed) I brought them to play the band shell at the GREEN and we went on to do a few gigs at the pool. FUN
Yes ... it was a dangerous place. I remember Arthur (especially) and Jerry and I were favorite targets of the local hoodlums... not so much fun...
Anyway ... Thanks Frank for remembering those dances. All in all ... not so bad ... I guess ...
Much love....jeffrey |

Jefferey for me the dream started when I walked in to your basement and so the Gibbous set up...Arhtur I think had the big Ampeg bass amp, Jerry the Traynor stack and your Gold Ludwig set...then you guys did " How Many More Times " and I was mezmorized... I remember Tree doing a great cover of Cat Squirrel at the Green... Bob Carapezza is going to the Cream Show next month at MSG...Ben Daidone is flying in from LA to go too, I think the Monday night show. I'm still trying to get tickets one way or another???? Crystal Balloon yeah they were great...and remember the Sound Conragation with Guy Perritore??? Cream revisted? Speaking of Guy I think Arthur is in touch with him, and they may be going to see Cream too at the garden? Thanks for all those memories Jefferey...Nodo, Petillo, Jack Patty, Joe Greco, Joe Piazza, Rubenstein, Tommy Libner, Holtz, Abbromowitz, The Allesi brothers??? and so on and so on...including all the rest of us here... Keep on posting on here every once in a while, I love hearing the old stories revisted. Peace... FranK |

Jeff couldn't have said any of it better! All of what he said shaped my life in a way that molded me to what I listen to today.. I still love Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention. All the time going to the Pool Dances seeing what I did gave me my great love of music... |

Good People of Valley Stream: I have stumbled on to this site and find it absolutely fascinating, having grown up in the fifties and sixties in that town. I believe you are from the northwest quadrant, judging by references to Everett Street and locations nearby. I lived on Fairfax Street, between Arlington and Roeckel Avenues, graduated, without honors, from Central High School in 1965, and knew some of the musicians you speak of, namely Pete Leinhos, Jack Patty and Willie Petillo. I am still in touch with Pete, and remember his band the Bad Boys quite well. In those days Larry Luby was on bass. I left Valley Stream in 1968, Long Island years later, and currently live in Las Vegas, NV. I remember the Pool Dances, and went to a couple of them when they first started. Went we became drinking age (eighteen in a more liberal era) we abandoned the pool for locations featuring stronger libations. For a while I played guitar in a band called Cobbs Gang. We did all covers of sixties stuff. Marty Badamo played lead guitar and sang, Tom Sisco sang lead and played sax, Dan Loesel was our drummer and Joe Carbonaro was on bass. If you don't mind my barging in here I would love to hear more, especially music and musician related reminiscences....anyone go to Alden School of Music for lessons? |

Welcome aboard Rich ! If you know or in touch with any other old Valley Streamers from those glory days put them in touch with the website!!!
Did Joe have a sister Rosanne Carbanaro? If so I went through grade school with her besides Memorial and Central. We started out at the litte Washington Ave school ( near you) for Kindgergarden and 1st grade and then on to Shaw Ave. BTW a lot of the people on here are from the area near Fairfax and a also a good portion from near Fireman's Field and cental Valley Stream area as well. I was on Sobro Ave at # 27 just about 5 houses off Everett St...Jeffery was on Wheeler Ave, Arthur on Euclid, Doc, Foch and Federicie were all around the corner from me on Everette. Bean |

Bean, or Mr. Bean as it may be: Roseann Carbonaro is in fact the younger sister of Joe and Vince Carbonaro. They lived on Brown Street. Roseann and Joe now live in Florida. A wonderful family. I know Joe since I was four or five years old. I have mostly fond memories of that Washington Ave. School. My friends and I used to play stickball in that tiny paved school yard. If you hit a spaldeen out over the fence (not such a tough shot) it was considered an out. The strike zone was chalked out on the school wall. Sometime in '59, if I recall correctly, there was a terrible murder committed in the house bordering the west edge of that school yard, on Fairmont Street. I never knew the victim's family, but a son of the slain woman in that house is a pretty good singer and guitar player, by my friend Marty Badamo's account. Marty's no slouch either. I consider him to be the best I've heard on guitar from VS. More on the Bad Boys: Pete Leinhos is alive and well and active in the Doo Wop Society of Southern California. Bob Bradley, I believe was drummer in that band. Parts of the group reformed as the Stanton Anderson Band and enjoyed many years of success on Long Island. I don't recall leopard or leopold skin boots and vests, but in the days I saw them they did steps while they played, like Paul Revere and the Raiders. I think I last saw them play at a joint called the Lamplighter, south of Sunrise Highway just off Rockaway Ave. Valley Stream was a great place to grow up, in the fifties through the sixties, I suppose in other eras, too. Many interesting and talented people. We used to use an expression, 'Good People', as in 'he's good people', when referring to people who you thought were....good, I guess. No better way to say it. In reading some of the messages on this site, I had the impression that it was populated with 'good people.' |

The house where the murder took place was next to the house of a freind of mine Andy Carrie? Does that name sound familiar at all? I also played stickball in the back of Washington Ave school but later played up at Alden Terrace which was actualy a little closer to my house. I remember the Stanton Anderson band well. I think they played a club my brother owned a few times. Phineas T's in Oceanside? Sound familiar at all?
Tell Rosanne Frank Lima ( aka Bean ) says Hello. We graduated Central in 1971 together.
Did you know Mike Fortunato on Carol Ave by any chance?
Valley Stream was a good place to grow up in...I still know a few people there. I lived on and off in Valley Stream last time leaving was in 2000 and now reside in New Jersey but still work on Long Island.

i moved to vs in 1964 and hung out in the rear of the washington ave school with alot of the locals, milillo, marrano, lamura, eller brothers, beanland, hart, caparella . we all graduated central in either 68-70. worked with marty badamo many years at the 5th pct until he transferred out and then retired. used to climb on the roof of the school and drink bear. one time climb up the incerator chimney and drank up there. real stupid when we were younger. even went swimming in the water works across from school. there was a 4x6 cover we took off and jumped in and jumped out quick. moved from wahington ave to the gibson area. still here in vs and no complaining knew a lot of people in the everett st area , some personally and some professionally. yelnats |

Bean: I knew of Phineas T's, but don't remember visiting that place. I knew an Eller family on Carroll Avenue. Doreen was in my graduating class at Central. I think one of her brothers was named Matt. I am in touch lately with Joe Carbonaro, and will ask him to forward your greeting to Roseann. Yelnats: are you still in touch with Officer Marty? |

I went through grade school with a Regina Lamura? Was that a sister of the Lamura you mentioned above. And the Millio's are related to me through marriage, my brother in law's family is directly realkted to the Millilo's. There was a Pete, Mike, and Aunt Alice, I think they were on Carrol or Ormande blvd or both or right in that area of Brown St. |

Yeah I know the area exactly...we use to walk by that candy store on the way to the Rosedale Bowling alley or the bus stop ( or the Rosdale train station )or the Pizza Place up on the corner of Merrick Rd...I think I was called Eddies Pizza at first than switched to J&S Pizza...also there use to be a head shop about a block down from there on the same side that we would go to for our " head " supplies " in the late 60'S and in to the early 70's...next to the lumber yard.
We only recently earlier this year sold my parents house from the area so I know how it has changed...I feel like a stranger now in that area almost like all the times we are talking about here never existed or at least not there. It's very sad.

Mention has been made of Washington Avenue....I remember that if you walked west on that street, up a little rise and looked east, you could see the dome of Central High School. |

Richm from Vegas,
Interesting how things come full circle on this internet. I have the honor to be included on the "Cobb's gang" thread since the reunion party in Easst Rockaway a few years ago (which I wasn't able to attend due to a gig). We met at a coffee house in Farmingdale the next night with the Gavins, JOhn Kleiss ect. though. Danny Loesel and I first met through Kerri Gavin and Doug & Mary Renna. (And Bob Phiffer through Kerry.) Being younger, I met up them after they all returned from the service '71 or '72?.. Danny, Kerry, Sal Sparacino and I played together for a while but did more drinking than giging. (We were also friendly with Eric's brother Ed). Later on, Kerry, Doug and I played in a band together for a few years and worked alot. We eventually added Jack Patti on guitar. I still have some old brittle reel to reel tapes.
I've been in fairly close touch with these guys over the past 30 years or so and Kerry and I play when we get to see one another. . a while back I contacted Pete and helped connect him with the Cobb thread. More recently, about a year and a half ago, Marty, Ken and Dan came to my place and we played a bit here in Sayville. A lot of laughs but no recording came of it.
And yes, I took accordion lessons at Alden Music (as well as Downs School of music) and went in there quite often as it was in walking distance. Here I am at 52 and I just started taking lessons again. This time on jazz guitar...... but not at Alden.
And you are correct.... many "good people" came out of that town. |
