Hi, everyone out there! As I become older (and hopefully wiser), I've had time to reflect on my experiences growing up as a child of the Green and Valley Stream. It never occurred to me that so many of us would be lost to sickness, life at the time seemed to go on forever, and would be one big party. I'd like to take this space to commemorate Lois Skogsberg, who died two years ago, from a rare cancer called Burkett's Disease. For those of us who knew Lois, she was a terrific friend, loyal, caring, and thoughtful. She was taken from us much too early, as were some other people from our school that would now be around our age (50 or so). If anyone out there has any Lois stories, please put them out there, so her memory can go on. Thanks.

Sally,
Perhaps if you posted a photo, it would jog some memories in the brains of we aging boys and girls.

I knew one Lois from the area but I thought she was from Elmont? She did work in a Jewlery store in Green Acres for a while though. Yes I agree Doc, our poor demented minds do need a photo to jog the dead memory cells. Bean |

Bean, it's not your memory...just a different time zone...I grew up on North Cottage Street (across the street from Michael Stanko). Jerry was a friend of my younger brother's in elementary school. Jerry had come over to my family's house and taught them how to make pizza pies! Arthur's Mom had been my 4-H or girl Scout something or other on some overnight trip and he had an older sister Jill and lived in the neighborhood. Some time maybe back in '96 or '97 I got re-introduced to Arthur as an adult when he & Jerry stopped by Cottage Street when I was visiting. Michael & Karen & family always included my mother in their yearly 4th of July parties so I always got an update on Michael. When you are young, five years, six years, 8 years seem like eternities...Michael was always that cute little smiling blonde baby boy across the street....Years later i am walking down Main street in new paltz (1977-78?) and someone approaches me and with that same big smile, he introduces himself as he warmly embraces me! ( It was Michael the adult!). Jerry I had become friends with for a long time, but, somehow we have totally lost contact. I had been to Kathy's cagean restaurnat with Jerry and some friends. I also remember meeting her brother Steve and he did a fantastic impression of my brother. He was so funny....i had been saddened at his passing. The english teacher at central, Tom Hackett, gave me the name "lucy in the sky" and since he was quite an memorable man the name always stuck with me.....I graduated in '69...time when people were chanting USA-Love it or leave it....anyone who silently protested the war and wore a black arm band were osterized from everyone (couldn't think or correct word my mind was searching for...so if "osterized' isn't it, excuse my Archie Bunkerism...but, words have been escaping my mind these days!). You still got suspended for smoking CIGARETTES on school grounds. It was a time when announcements came over the loudspeaker like Amy Shaw suspended for wearing a polyester PANTS suit to school! Girls were not allowed to wear pants. Sororites and fraternities were big things. The population of the school was divided into 3 categories.....hoods (those black leather, white undershirt, pack of marlboro tucked in the sleeve guys/those teased hair, black racoon eyes, white lipped big mouthed gals....then the collegiates...most in the green jacketed fraternity alpha omega i think it was called...although the black & gold guys omega gamma delta had some members in the collegiate category, then the dorks , nerds, whatever words used today there was the category of fags (and that word had a very different meaning then....they were the really smart, bookworms who carried armfuls of books home every night, or the goofy kids, or the kids that followed every rule and could never deviate. It's funny to think how we judged, how we categorized people...how we all sought to fit in or not fit in.....how important it seemed, how meaningless it was...... okay Bean....how did I do? You wouldn't know me...too many years separated us.... |

Lucy, Yo did good..you shook the cobwebs off my poor demented mind. Did you know Alice Salm who lived around the corner from Michael on Berry St? We were married for a few years inthe early 90's. We're still friends she lives inb Florida now? Also how could you know Arthur and not know me??? Did you ever see Arthur when we were in the band FTW with Jeffery Zohler ( after Gibbous) who lived on Wheeler Ave a few houses around the corner from Michael. Plus I was over Jerry and Arthur's house many many times, hanginf out or playing music, or getting blasted. I use to hang out in Arthus upstairs room on Euclid St. practing my vocals to the live Doors album doing my rendition of Jim's live version of Gloria...It use to freak Arthur out. I put it to good use when I did my Iggy impersonation at the Holy Name Church dance. And as for Steve Laskody aka Flash...I did my first hit of hash oil with Steve up in his parents house down from the Green...what a trip that was. Steve was a dear friend and I was sad at his passing too. So Lucy what's your real name now?
Kathy's resturant is the Bayou, the original in Bellmore still open but the Rockville Center one closed. My brother owned Phinea's T's in Oceanside, The Deep Six ( later to become Paddie McGhee's )in Island Park, and The Smithville Cafe in Bellmore and my Sister owned The College Barn in Farmingdale, also had one in Oceanside and Glen Cove for a short time. Ever hear of any of those bars or resturants?

I don't know the name Salm...alice? I remember the Abelow family on Bery street, i think joe & gary stagnits's family, doreen wilgan (couple of years older...pledged me hard in high school!), but, i don't recall alice salm. I only knew of Arthur...never went to his home or hear his band FTW...i do remember the name Jeffrey Zohler (probably from my brother...did he have a sister Andrea?) I didn't really know Kathy...I remembered her from my "hanging out at the club bar" days....Jerry p. brought me to her restaurnat once when i met steven laskody. Years later I went with a friend to introduce to Kathy (arranged by my brother). I do recall Phinea's T, but, none of the other places you mentioned (deep six, smithville cafe, or college barn). I must have led a very sheltered life in the valley! |

Hi Artangas! you are right...we met at my house when you came over with Jerry....upstairs in my old bedroom!!!! I am George's sister, Joan! I wouldn't expect Jill to remember my name...that was when I was in Girl scouts (so over four decades ago!!!). I somehow have this unique ability to remember someone's name from years ago, but, can't remember the names of anyone I meet these days!!!! Hope you & your family are all well and happy |

" You're a misfit Afraid of yourself so you run away and hide You've been a misfit all your life But why don't you join the crowd and come inside You wander round this town Like you've lost your way You had your chance in your day Yet you threw it all away Now you're lost in the crowd Yet, still go your own way " --Ray Davies
" They'll move me up to Muswell Hill tomorrow, Photographs and souvenirs are all I've got, They're gonna try and make me change my way of living, But they'll never make me something that I'm not.
They're putting us in little boxes, No character just uniformity, They're trying to build a computerised community, But they'll never make a zombie out of me. " --Ray Davies
" The days go by and you wish you were a different guy, Different friends and a new set of clothes. You make alterations and affect a new pose, A new house, a new car, a new job, a new nose. But it's superficial and it's only skin deep, Because the voices in your head keep shouting in your sleep. Get back, get back. " --Ray Davies
" I've just had a dream that I never will forget. And I wish I could erase. I was standing on the street with a whole crowd of people And no one knew my name. And I was just another face No one looked at me or touched me Spoke to or acknowledged me. I had no identity or individuality No thoughts of my own, no mind or personality. I was just a no one, a total nonentity " -- Ray Davies

Who is he? meaning Ray Davies? Think Kinks ! One of the great rock bands of all time.
Did you hear the real Lucy who Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds was inspired by just passed away from cancer of some sort. She was a classmate of julian Lennon so she is the same age as him I guess somewhere in the late 30's or very early 40's?
By the way Lucy start taking follic acid suplements, it was just in the news how follic acid improves memory and wards off altimerzers disease.
Eric Burdon and the Animals still sounds as relevent today as it did back then, I have a lot of his music and besides hits that you always hear on the radio like It's my life, We got to get out of this place, & Don't let me be mis-understood ( my personal favorite )his more obscure songs are also really good...Boom Boom and with War Spill the Wine. Ray Davies once said his all time favorite rock song is the " We got to get out of this place " and if you listen to a lot of the Kinks themes Ray hits on that theme over and over...like in Superman..." Superman Superman, Wish I could fly like super man, hey girl we got to get out of this place, there's got to be something better than this ", " Holiday " " Drift Away ", "20th Century Man " and the list goes on and on. |
