Posted - January 05 2006 : 03:20:17 AM Carla, Elena Little Steven hosts a weekly show on Sunday nights at 10PM called " Little Steven's Underground Garage " and it's the best couple of hours of music you will hear anywhere...I bet it's somewhat similar to the show you mentioned elena...he plays amazing obscure pop and rock records from the 50's to present day, girl groups, motown, soul, blues, pop, punk, on my drive to work I have to pry myself out of the car to leave this broadcast... I want to win the gazilion dollar lottery so I can start my own radio station if for nothing else so I can play THE PLASTIC ON BAND'S " Don't Worry Kyoko Mommy is only looking for a hand in the snow " I remember when Richie and me were working at 3R Microfilm on Merrick Rd, we would go to Valbrook diner and sit at the tables with the jukebox at each table but when you put your money in your heard everybody's selection and they would eventually hear yours well I always played the flip sides to The Plastic Ono Band records which had YOKO screaming at the top of her lungs over a loud wall of guitar noise and feedback...you had to see the looks on peoples faces who were drunk in the diner at 4AM in the morning when that came on....priceless. !!! ( this was when Richie and me were working the night shift alone together...the stories we could tell ! (:

You are so right about the state of major city radio! Everything is bottomline $ & cents- what a shame.
I also listen alot to what my students listen to: rap & latin reggeaton- so I have diverse musical choices at my fingertips. I also play music everyday as my kids enter the room and I expose them to my old favs plus classical,Broadway,World,etc- so they know that there is another world out there. Sometimes they even get to play DJ- great motivating factor for them to get work done!
All for now, I have to finish writing a test for the little darlings :)
Ciao!
TAke care, Carla

Posted - January 04 2006 : 03:21:07 AM You would think that music centers like LA and NYC would have great rock stations. We are lucky that there are public radio stations or fuhgeddaboudit! Commercial radio is awful now. How can the DJs keep from slashing their wrists! There is one bright light out here in commercialradioland. Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols hosts a radio show in Los Angeles. 103.1 FM. He plays amazing music and he is also hilarious! |

Posted - January 04 2006 : 12:34:36 AM Carla... Yeah Rock radio since WNEW FM went out of business is the pits. I listen to the Peak too, they are pretty good, and FUV is pretty good too but they stick mostly to the lighter side of rock music.
As for Neil Our Foch he is still the same so who know when you will hear back from him...
Talk to you soon... Looking forward to seeing you when the weather warms up.

Hi. did you catch Yoko's full page quote from "Imagine" in Sunday's Times? Simple and beautiful.
Yes, I listen to FUV and also 107.1- the Peak. Since NEW-FM left the dial there hasn't been a decent station in metro NYC area- they will always be the best there ever was!
Glad you got to hear Sloan. She recently played a Xmas concert with the Magarigol sisters and her nephew Rufus W.- sorry to have missed it.
I am going to be very busy these next few months. In addition to my normal teaching job i am also doing a 200hr internship at the District Administrative level and also taking Grad courses- so my life won't be own until July :(
Let's get together when the weather is good and possible storms- I am not a huge fan of driving in ice & snow are a memory.
I wrote Neil but haven't heard back from him.
All for now. Have to plan stuff for the rest of the week. :)
Take care. Carla

Posted - January 02 2006 : 7:29:18 PM Hi Carla.. I think i heard Sloan Wainwright played on WFUV which I listen to a bit especially in the morning driving home from work. I bet you listen to that station if not you should because I think you would really appreciate and like what they play. They don't play all the boring repettitous crap you hear over and over on regular radio being they are a free form non commercial listener supported college radio station.
Anyway I'm glad you had a good time at your show too and Andrea and me wish you all the best for 2006. Happy New Year and maybe we can get together and meet one afternoon for lunch. We're not that far away from each other???
luv your forever bean...Frank |

Happy New Year to both you and Andrea!
Sounds like you both enjoyed yourself at PAtti Smith's concert. I was at a Xmas concert(Sloan Wainwright)where the band and the audience also really rocked out to Gloria- VAn the man never lets you down. I haven't heard his latest yet- but it is on my list to buy.
Take care.
My best, Carla

Posted - January 02 2006 : 03:18:00 AM Hi Elena.... Very Cool...much better than the previous night. They ( Patti and her band ) rocked out and the stage was covered with confetti and all sorts of party stuff at the stroke of midnight has the band launced in to a frenzied version of Horse's closing with G L O R I IIIIII A GLORIA ! or as Patti herself would say " Jesus Died for somebody's sins....But not Mine " ! When she plays out West you have to see her.
FranKO SpaghettiO
PS we saw her in Chicago earlier last year and we loved the city too. The Museums, Architecture, and resturants too... |
