Late Friday after noon I was in the car ( not the Bullitt) with my wife ( she was driving ) as we headed down Ridgewood Ave in New Jersey when we just passed up Ridgewood Ford which is a rather small dealership and THERE IT WAS, sitting right out front street side, MY FIRST FORD GT SIGHTING, a royal blue with white stripes work of sheer beauty. I made her jam on the brakes and hang a hard right in to the dealer ship coming a little too close to the GT for my comfort as I jumped out of the car to worship this amazing car. The salesman who sold me my Bullitt and Ranger came out as I was drooling over the car. I told him I'd givew him 50K cash to drive it off the lot right now??? He told me it stickered at $164,000 but they would probably be looking to get around $200,000 for it. After being that close to the car for a few minutes I had to leave and my wofe made me leave when I started mumbling to myself " well if I sell this and that, remortgage the ???, get another full time job...as I was last seen being dragged back in to the car and heading down Ridgewood Ave.

Without a doubt this is my favorite all time production car ever. If you live in the area go see it ! Ridgewood Ford just about borders Saddle River New Jersey where most houses are at minimum 1.5 million up to god knows what so someone from that area with pocket change should scoop this baby up quick and hopefully I'll get to see it on the road too ! If only I bought 1000 shares of Google a few years ago !!!

Also our very Own Big Arthur who works at Syossett Ford said they got a White one in with Blue stripes, and when I asked him if he drove it he said he couldn't fit in to it!

It definitely had the running boards...I was only about 5 or 6 when he got it and he didn't have it too long. ( My brother is 14 years older than me )

Bean: If that MG had a side mounted tire, then it probably had running boards as well. I would guess that it was an MG TD. Way cool!
There is a guy around the block from me that has two mint condition Triumphs. I think one is a TR 6. The other is an earlier model, perhaps a TR 3. I'll go look. Be right back....

My brother had either a 57 or 58 MGA also. It had the spare tire mounted on the side if I remember correctly? I had a 75 Triumph TR-6. I loved that car, and regret ever getting rid of it. Not the best mechanical or reliable car but I loved the way it looked. I bought it new too.

These Vega and Fiat Spyder memories are wonderful? Who could ever need a Ford GT 40 with cars like these?
My first heap was a 1958 MGA. I would take it out for a Sunday push on occasion. I only had to put one starter and one clutch in it before I got rid of it.

Doc wasn't your Dodge Dart what we used to go to the supermakerket in green acres to pick up the chop meat & peanut butter for our Iggy/FTW Perormance at Holy Name the Friday after Thanksgiving? Also I think we even loaded some of our equipment in your car too and also used Mrs Feds Caddy and other cars to haul the rest of the amplifiers, drums and various equipment. The funny part for the trip home we hardly needed any one to haul the equipment back home because it got smashed to pieces or grabbed off the stage for souvineers when the riot broke out. I still am amazed that we made it out alive and for the most part not too damaged. I remember a few people did end up in the hospital. I think Tom Peretti got flattned by a PA speaker column I toppled off the stage and hit him? Of course this was after he cornered me behind the stage curtains and was swinging a heavy michrophone stand aimlessly at the curtains tryin to decapatate me.

PS- I remember your Fiat and your Dads Vega too.

My father had a red '63 Dodge Dart convertable that I clamed as my own; Complete with push button transmission and no reverse. I added a dayglow sunset covering the trunk lid and various other "works of art" all over the rest of the body. He later bought a '71 Vega complete with a "flexable" aluminum block. The dealer even tried to talk him out of it. The engine was replaced at 12K.

I saved my coins and bought an equally wonderful 1968 Fiat 850 Spyder for $550. I had the engine out of that thing more than it was in. Anyone remember it? It was usually parked under a tree on my front lawn so that I could yank out the engine using a heavy tree branch and a chain.

Yes, like I said it was a piece of crap. The engine was made of reynolds alluminum foil !

If I recall, those Vegas looked nice, but there were problems with the aluminum blocks. Did yours burn heaps of oil?

Bean: I am not much of a car head, but I do remember the Ford GT 40 racing in the '60s. If I am correct, there were some street versions around, and I believe there was one in Valley Stream around '67 or so. My friends and I saw the car. Pretty great looking car, ain't it? It might be worth the 200k.
And now for tonight's question for all the Out on the Corner readers: What was you first car?
