Mary Hopkins " Those were the days " is that the song you are talking about? Released on the Beatles Apple label.
I Loved the Action House, almost played there once. Humble Pie use to rock that place, my ears have never been the same. Mountain and The Vanilla Fudge too, later Twisted Sister.
" strange days " Jim Morisson, but I agree Lucy.

...."those were the days my friend, we thought they'd never end, we'd sing and dance forever and a day".....those words from that song just brought me back to maybe '69 and the Westwood Inn (there i go again...only bars!!!!)..remember the blizzard of '69 and the big black-out (1967)....what Was the name of that song and who sung it? How about the Action House on Long Beach Road? I remember seeing Edgar winter there and my first experience smoking angel dust .....(1970'ish). It's funny...in high school i wanted so much to fit in....pledging for sorority, getting inducted, having a steady boyfriend. blah, blah, blah.....then i graduate, go to work for the dime savings bank (i went to my first "real" job interview in a pleated skirt, penny loafers & knee socks!!! After i got hired and made some friends they all told me how they laughed at my attire and made fun of me! After high school I never wanted to fit in....the people i worked with at the bank all seemed so robotic and set in their ways. i loved ruffling everyone''s feathers on our breaks in the coffee lounge. It was a time when people really believed if you smoked a joint you were going to go home and murder & dismember your mother! If a male sported long hair, they were bad, probably drug addicts....homosexuality was the devil's work, hippies ought to be done away with, you were really judged by your clothing and length of hair. Even wearing patchouli oil meant you were "one of them"....

I know the feeling Lucy...driving through Valley Stream now really makes me sad and I get such an empty feeling....

..it is a strange feeling...growing up in a town, years of many assorted memories and then finding your connections and ties are all gone...i just returned from the valley...drove past my parents old house on north cottage , past memorial, central (even wheelier avenue) trying to evoke memories and flashbsacks of days gone by...the club bar is still on rockaway avenue (first hangout after central), the nite cap had become harper's,the walk in became terry o's, a place called the Public house on sunrise, the Trees Lounge owned by diianne mitchells' Mother in the 60's maybe.(the one steve buscemi did a movie about), another bar up rockaway past sunrise on right hand side (coakley's?),....this is beginning to sound lke my only memeories of VS were bars! Actually i think that became my only memory of New paltz when i moved back there in 75 as well!

Thanks for reminding me Doc, I always think Richies birthday is in April not March. Somebody's birthday in VS was in early April, was it Ronnies?

Happy Birthday Richie, let us all know how you are doing every once in a while.

I wish we could go back to the 50's and 60's in our old neighborhood. We just sold my parents house on Sobro 2 weeks ago, was it ever weird leaving it for the last time on the day of the closing??? Now the only ties I have back to Valley Stream, are Foch still living at his parents house on Everette St. and if I go over to visit Karen and Michael.

And once again, a belated happy birthday old man!

I still remember the neighborhood birthday parties in the 50's and early sixties.
