There were all sorts of stories from Queens, NYC, Brooklyn, and even our own Long Island of people hanging out on street corners, on front steps, driveways, backyards, ect...having giant impomptu parties, barbaques, ect... with neighbors and locals they never talked to before...emptying out freezers and fridges of food that would go bad anyway and sharing it with everyone...Bean

On my way to work yesterday, listening to the radio, one station played a tape of the Black-Out Drummers, drumming in Union Square, during the black-out Thursday night. Alot of people made a party out of it, dancing, singing and making music! I wanted to be there!!! I heard that there was also a marching band in a neighborhood in Brooklyn. |

as for the 77' Blackout that was not a great time in my life so maybe I just blacked it out of my mind...,
and Lou I heard you were standing on a street corner singing " Power to the People " during the whole thing....hey it finally worked after all these years, nice job?

I remember very well the big black-out of 1965. I was ten years old. My family sat together around the kitchen table and talked and laughed. I have a wonderful memory of it because it was so rare that we would all be together like that. Otherwise, the television would be on, or the usual goings on that would normally have kept us in our own private worlds, but this was pretty amazing to me. My father made hot water for coffee by putting the coffee pot over a candle which left a lovely permanent blackened stain on it. We played scary games in the dark, one was that my brother would hold the flashlight under his face, and we would scream!
Life Magazine had a wonderful photo of a big bright full moon above a darkened Manhattan.
Frank, you probably don't remember the 1977 black-out because that was a sad time, with people trashing the city, robbing, and smashing windows. |

Glad to hear some things never change...
I remember too having to do my homework by candle light that early November in 1965...I remember that blackout much better than the one in 1977?
Say hello to Dink, Lillian, Eddie, Terri, Benny, and Ricky next week when you are down in Ga visiting...Sounds like you guys have a fun filled week....oh yeah I think you are suppose to see Richie too so be sure to give him a big hug and kiss for me...? Not too big though !!! I don't the old boy getting too excited at his age !  Bean |

Correct! '65, autumn, and a full moon. My mom made me complete all of my homework by candle light. Thursday was great. Quiet and dark. We were able to sit outside, drink beer and see the stars - as opposed to sitting outside, drinking beer and looking for the stars.

We did OK...
I went into work early last night, it was great no traffic !!!!
Newsday was luck to get a paper out, last night too, they hve an UPS power system but we lost one of the 2 generators last night that power the presses, but al our desk top PC's were dead so that why I didn't write in last night....Power at home came back on about 4AM and in Valley Stream too, I called my Moms House in the morning. Did you speak to Ronnie or your Mom. I think Merrick/Massapequa got their power on later...Melville where Newsday is was still out in late morning....
