Posted - February 27 2003 : 05:41:44 AM Today, the new design selected for the re-development of the World Trade Center site will be officially announced.
And ... the winner is ...
What do you think?
A couple of snippets, courtesy of CNN:
quote: [The] proposal featured a tower 1,776 feet tall, symbolic for the year of American independence, that would demonstrate "the durability of democracy," while the top floors would be filled with indoor gardens as a "confirmation of life." The tower would be the world's tallest.
quote: The architect says that having calculated the arc of the sun, a wedge of natural light would funnel visitors to the memorial site, and that every September 11 between 8:46 a.m., when the first tower was struck by a plane, and 10:28 a.m., when the second tower collapsed, no shadows will be cast by his buildings.
Pretty impressive, is my first reaction! I like it! |

Posted - March 10 2003 : 6:39:15 PM Although we want to show our fortitude and resilience (and need/want the $) many of us want to build buildings taller than the Trade Center. I would prefer, however, to leave the site open and build a small monument and park area for reflection. I guess I'm an absolutist. Look how powerful the Vietnam Memorial is in D.C. This would be immensely more powerful because of the wide open space, with the small church still standing next door. Maybe then we would never forget the gaping hole in our being at the time of the attack. We are already forgetting the outrage and sadness we felt that day; witness the return to politics and business as usual with so many politicians pushing the party line instead of what's right! |
