I have read somewhere that some Indian males were homosexuals and they formed a separate group within the camp/tribe. Is this correct ?
Did they participate in wars or not ?
Did they wear the same type of clothes/headwear as other warriors ?
Do you know any Sioux war-chief who was gay ?

The Sans Arcs (those without bows)are said to have received this nomenclature because of the beliefs of an hermaphrodite. Hermaphrodites were granted status by Indian society. They were believed to have prophetic powers and were honored accordingly. E.S. Connell relays a story in which a hermaphrodite advised his tribesmen to place their weapons on a hilltop while he consulted the future. A hostile war paty showed up, unexpectedly, and wiped them out. Every since then these foolish people were called Sans Arcs by other Sioux.
