HI, I am trying to figure out what Cooke actually did from the time Grant removed him in Jan. 1867 until he retired 29 October, 1873. At the end he was in administration but I am uncertain of where? Particularly interested in finding out if he still commanded troops or was active in the west in April of 1868 (Omaha maybe?). Thanks, Andy

Andy, I am looking but, like you, all I can find is that he was doing administrative work, not where or what. He was relieved from command of the Department of the Platte by General Augur. Somewhere around here I have a copy of a booklet issued in defense of Cooke's actions in the Dept. of the Platte, written in the late 1800's, by a former staff orderly. Maybe that, when I found it, will clarify the mystery.

An archaeologist? You may want to pop over to the Custer's Last Stand, Springfield Cartridges thread. We need some expert opinions in that field.

Merry Christmas,

Billy
