TREATMENT OF RED MEN-GEN. JOHN GIBBON

Gen. John Gibbon was described by E.A. Brininstool as "One of our greatest Indian fighter" of the middle 70's. In 1877 Gibbon wrote a series of articles for the American Catholic Quarterly Review, which dealt with the campaign of the Centennial Year. His views did not speak complimentary of then, U. S. policies.

"When, then, the Indian, driven to desperation by neglect or want, and his sense of wrong goes to war (and even a Christian will fight before he will starve)the Army is called in to whip these 'wards of the nation' into submission."

General Gibbon was certainly aware of many of the atrocities committed on both sides during the Indian wars. Yet,he does not single out and use Indian atrocities as a justification for the governments use of its Army. I find this perspective commendable.
