From time to time I read a lot about "what would have happened" if Custers men all had sabers at LBH.
Well-I can hardly imagine what 7th Cavalry saber training might have been like, but I have a picture in my mind of the troopers swinging them around mightily with no real inkling how to use them. Sort of like pugel stick (i.e. bayonet) training in the Army I was in (Vietnam era, 1967-1969). All sorts of instruction on how to properly use it, then watch the troops swing the things at each other like baseball bats.
So although I do believe that a certain few of the 7th may have been able to sell their lives a bit more dearly, for the most part the sabers would have been relatively useless--just more souveniers for the Indians.
Anybody have a different take?? |

Brent, sorry but you take is very similar to mine. Undoubtedly, a few troopers would have dispatched warriors with the "long knives" but, the end result would have been the same. My reason for this perspective is that I'm convinced then the fall of the mighty 7th. was due to the close proximity of the warriors who possessed superior firepower;repeating rifles. Enough of them to get the job done. Based on this theory, with few exceptions,the sabers would have just been more cumbersome items to get rid of while in flight. |
