Warlord,
using a 35mm camera
1]the horse photograph
you would need a 100 or 135 lens
set the shutter speed for 250 or 125 to create the water splashing,point the camera at the grass,take the reading inside the camera and set,focus the camera for roughly half way accross river.
2]view shot
standard- wide angle lens,take reading from grass,want to take between f8-f11.

El Crab, bhist is right: it's the Realbird family. I met mark Realbird after the reenactment for the 125th anniversary, which is held on their property a couple hundred yards southwest of where we were when you took this picture. After the reenactment, Mark invited us to camp right on MTC. We weren't able to at the time, so he said "anytime." I'd love to take him up on that. Imagine camping right where it happened! Nice pictures. |

Well, there ya go. Couldn't even get either name right. I blame the World Series for the Redbird fixation. Or maybe its Real and Red don't look all that different. Who knows, my memory usually does not let me down.

Wait, lemme start that one over. I used a Casio QV-R40 digital camera. Has a 3x optimal zoom and 4.0 megapixels. Unfortunately, I'd love to be better versed on photography, but between LBH, golf, my car, drawing and various other pursuits, I just don't have the time or money to delve into photography. Next time (possibly this summer), I'll be snagging my dad's old 35mm. She was quite the performer back in the day, and still is.
Everything came out kinda blue, which I can't explain. It was very sunny, and color was a bit lacking that time of year. But I am very happy with how it turned out. The shots work well with the marble markers, I think.
On the Redbird shot, I lucked out. We all got down on the lower part of the MTC ford, there's a bank and then the riverbed. I was up against the bank, crouched. When he came across, I thought I had missed the shot. But it turned out. |

Very astute of you. I tried to make sure I got pictures with people in the shot, at distance. Just for that very reason, to give it scale. The land is very deceptive, in that the distance doesn't seem as far until you realize how small a person looks.
I'll be putting up all my pix sometime soon. I have to format all the HTML so it won't just be an incoherent gaggle of photos. As I said before (and my signature attests as well), I took over 300 photos. From Custer's camp in Busby on the 24th, following the 7th's march, the Crow('s) Nest, the Divide, Reno Creek, the Lone Tipi site (depending on which person you ask) and the Morass (same thing). |

Many Thanks El Crab,after replying to your photo's it suddenly dawned on me that you are on the crow reservation
The picture with the people in the foreground shows how open the troops were to rifle fire from the ravines,and what cover the Indians had.I take it that the RH side of the photo is were CH came from.
Probarbly just as well Benteen never got there,I think the death toll would have been far greater.
Over here in Scotland,they still cannot decide where the actual battle of Bannockburn took place,and thats after many diggings,plus there were many survivors.

The Red Birds (or Redbirds?) are Crow Indians who own the land around MTC. As in Joe Red Bird, etc. I just can't remember the mounted gentleman's first name. |

No, that's one of the Red Birds. They own the land around MTC. He came flying up on that horse, a couple of us thought he was showing off, the others thought he was trying to intimidate us. But, we were in good company if that was the case. He let us go down to the ford, and offered to cross the river for us on his horse.
Yeah, the Vincent Charles marker is a bit disappointing. I might photoshop it to correct the error. They also still have Arthur Reed instead of Harry/Armstrong/Autie Reed. Not to mention the Reed marker (and Boston Custer marker next to it) are not where they were found. They're about 100 or 200 yards (I forget which) too far north. |

I'm really surprised that nobody's yet bothered to replace the Vincent "Charles" marker. What a silly error to make.
