In the advance of the 7th USC from its camp site in the vicinity of modern-day Busby to Battle Ridge on the Custer Battlefield National Monument, the regiment halted several times. Who, what, where, when and why did they halt? |

Hal,
Like you, in reading Brininstool, I count four regimental halts (i.e. 12 companies) reported by Captain Benteen on the 25th of June 1876*. They were:
The Night Road March/Coffee Break Long Halt: On Davis Creek
The Hide Long Halt: On Davis Creek vicinity the Crow’s Nest
The “First to Report Gets the Lead” Halt: “a mile or so” beyond the Hide Halt
The Division Halt: Just west of the Divide
However, in The Benteen-Goldin Letters by John M. Carroll, there are two different versions of the battle written by Benteen. As far as I can tell, neither was dated so I don’t know which one was Benteen’s “final” version. The first version (in the order within the book) Benteen describes three halts (Carroll, 161). In this version, Benteen associates the events associated with “ready gets the lead”, with the Hide Halt. The second version, which appears to be the one quoted by Brininstool, has the four halts listed above (Carroll, 176).
I’ll check other testimony next to see if any other witnesses can confirm or deny 3 or 4 halts.

As I work this question, I'm using the following to categorize "halts":
Bivouac/Camp: As defined by the regiment stopping "for the night".
Long Rest Halt: Any halt equal to or greater than 20 minutes but less than stopping for the night.
Short Halt: Any halt less than 20 minutes. Generally these happened, and generally they were not recorded unless associated with some other noteworthy event (as defined by the participant making a record of them).

I must say that for every tpoic that comes up, you can bet there is
going to be a heated fight. When I said about the halts, it was a
quetion put to me. It has always been my understanding that there
were basicly three halts in the movement of the regiment from the
Busby area. And also my understanding was these halts were made by
the whole regiment. It was pointed out to me in the question that
Capt Benteen had stated in "Troopers With Custer" pages 74-75 that
the regiment had made 4 halts. Now I have gone over these pages and
it does appear that the regiment made four halts. But is this also
a case where Capt. Benteen is just repeating himself or did the 7th
regiment halt four times. Now I understand that all of this does not
matter in the out come of the battle.
Now the question has been put to me and I am trying to find an answer
to the matter.

Wrangler, I thought your question was very clear when you asked, who, what, where and why, so I don't know the purpose of blackcloud's inquiry as to the specificity of your question, such as do you mean the regiment, the command, was it a quick halt, a timeout, a recess, or what is it? It's kinda like what does "is" mean? Good luck in your quest. |

Well, here's the issue. When you mean 'the regiment' halts, do you mean when the majority, the commander, or all come to a halt? Is a halt a dismount?
Wouldn't it be easier to just state the error so we can get to it? |
