Posted - January 26 2006 : 3:28:02 PM I was invited to this website by a friend. At first, I was reluctant to join because of the apparent harrasment from the likes of DC and Warlord. I usually take personal cricitism to heart and quite naturally one should understand my reasons for not wanting to join. Against my better judgement, I decided to join this forum. It wasn't because of the quality or the quantity of post. It was because of the fairness of the administrator here. Over time, I watched his reaction to the other posts made. And I do feel that Rich has done an execllent job in administrating this site. I have had no personal contact with him, nor may I add, do I personally know him. But I do wish to thank him for a job well done.
Recently on another site I was verbally attacked. Not the way it was done here, by direct insults and accusations. But through a direct insult to my heritage that was biased, rasict and perpetually bigotted. Though normally this would not be a problem. It was in this instance. Because the person making those accusations it seems, couldn't differentiate between the past and the present. It's like perpetuating the statement, past to present, that "the only good indian is a dead indian" and saying that is true today. Because of what their forefather's did. Sins of the father's, I guess?
The administrator there never did correct this person's attitude, nor in any way attempt to. In fact, quite the reverse was true. And I may still add, is true. Yet when one signs up for that forum this is what it says:
"You agree, through your use of this forum, that you will not post any material which is false, defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening..."
"Anyone who feels that a posted message is objectionable is encouraged to notify an administrator of this forum immediately."
"It is your responsibility to present clean and accurate information. Any information we deem inaccurate or vulgar will be removed."
Not only was this stated to the administrator through numberous post, not only by me, but others as well to be: defamatory, abusive, hateful, harassing, obscene, and yes even threatening. The administrator did nothing! Quite the opposite. The administrator encouraged the other persons: defamatory, abusive, hateful, harassing, obscene, threatening remarks, and still does to this day.
I like most people come to these forums with an open mind. And like most, I come to share in the exchange ideas, listen to and share some new thoughts, and broaden some of my persepective & views on the battle. And try to make it enjoyable and informative for everone. I can only say that, yes I have been unfairly treated at times here. Personal attacks upon me serve no good nor purpose. Just as any I may make upon another, would serve no purpose. I have found however that most of you, the people, who makeup and support this site do have a good understanding of the LBH. And I have come to enjoy your comments and remarks. Sometimes they can be not only informative, but ironic as well. For that I am grateful.
As Rich once said, and I firmly believe his words are quite simply the best:
"It is not about difference of opinion or heated discussion ...
No ... it is about common decency & personal dignity. Everyone here obviously has a common interest. Share in that common interest. Enjoy the company of others who are willing to engage in discussion. Face it, most of us can't bring this topic up at the dinner table, workplace, or local sports bar and seriously engage. Here one can.
Don't ruin it."
Indeed Rich! Indeed! It would not surprise me in the least, if that other website fails. Becuase if an administrator cannot realise that "common decency and personal dignity" are the foundation upon which any good site resides then it is doomed to failure. And only someone who is as responsible as Rich knows: That it is important to maintain an atmosphere where "common decency and personal dignity" will keep a website healty and enduring. Thankyou Rich, keep up the good work!

Posted - January 28 2006 : 09:22:55 AM Thank you very much, Benteen ... it was good to read that. Sometimes, from this end, it seems I fail miserably. Your words will make me rethink that!
Carry on! |
