I'm doing a dissertation on native american representation in last of the mohicans, i was wondering if anyone has any views on the subject? were they portrayed fairly in the movie? how true to life was it, with regard dress, speech, interaction etc

The Last of the Mohicans, I believe, portrayed American Indian lifeways & interactions better than just about any movie ever. It would be one of its strong points ...

But, don't take my word for it. Read what one of their most vocal proponents had to say, in the CHAT WITH CHINGACHGOOK (nutcrackers aside! ) The other interviews [Mike Phillips' & Wes Studi's, in particular] ought to help you, as well!

Hi, In answer to your question about the authenticity of the style of dress, representation, I live in Western North Carolina, where the movie was filmed, and I came to know alot of extras in the movie. I can honestly say that there was a tremendous amount of thought to detail for the movie. The Huron's style of dress in Huronland was researched thoroughly, and the detail to the hairstyles of the Mohicans, Fox and Sak and the Abenaki natives was also researched, along with the war makeup everyone wore. Alot of the extras came in with long straight hair, and they were paid a fair amount to have their hair cut in the authentic styles which was a great look once they did it..The average time in getting into makeup was about an hour to an hour and a half. I hope this answers your question..
