'Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges! I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!' -- Gold Hat

I just watched what is arguably the greatest movie ever made, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Bogie's Fred C. Boggs character was such a wack-job, becoming nuttier by minute, and Walter Houston just ate up the scenery, to say nothing of Alfonso Bedoya's ultimate classic line about "stinkin' badges."

The movie critic Leonard Maltin summed it up best when he commented about modern movie watchers who don't like most "old" movies, because they almost all too sentimental, being taken aback by this one because it certainly is not sentimental.

All I can say is, if you haven't seen it, watch it soon! ... and if you have seen it, watch it again!

That is an excellent movie. Bogie is at his creepiest as Boggs- the look of paranoia in his eyes spooks me every time. Huston is great as the sage worldwise Howard.
Great movie- thanks for reminding me.

Definitely one of the best. My favorite is Casablanca. He's at his finest in that one! Well, really in most of them. Maltese Falcon for instance. I never liked him as a gangster, but as a tough guy, he's the best.

I agree Obi this is a brilliant movie. Just love the way they "turn on each other" and Bogie's descent into "madness" is just excellent. Been quite a while since I last saw it so have to rewatch sometime soon. Prospecting for gold always brings out the worst in folks.

That seemed to be the moral (or at least one of them) of this story...

If you want to find some real weirdness, check for info on the author of TTOTSM, "B. Traven."
