The colonials, who weren't even officially Americans yet, fought an amazing fight that day. They really gave the British hell. Even though they lost the ground, it really was a victory in other ways.
A 5th great-grandfather of mine, who was in Stark's Brigade on the north beach, was one of the 140 colonial men who were killed. The name William McCrillis is on the monument on Bunker Hill. He left behind his young wife and 2 year old daughter, who became my 4th great-grandmother.
