If you check out www.ibiscom.com/lexington.html, you'll find a qouted sworn statement by Sylvanus Wood, part of the Lexington Militia, claiming that the British fired first. The first shot was probably just a powder fire as no man was hit then a second round killed a few men. It is pretty interesting to read his account.
