Hope you all had a very Merry Christmas!
I know it has been frustrating of late with the site being on again/off again so frequently. I believe the situation is rectified now. It has appeared stable since we moved it, a few days ago, to a different server [same host]. The high volume of visitation, added to the downloads, and message board activity literally was causing the server to blow a gasket & shut down. Our site is now on a high configuration server and should do well. One of the curses of getting so BIG! There are a few kinks, but I think that they are all administrative type things, and we are resolving them one by one.
Any Gathering news?
Regarding the Lion's Den ... enjoyed your comments ... what I did,was to change the theme within that forum to, appropriately, black & blue. Beat yourselves up! If nothing else, you'll now know you are in a "different" place. I more subtly changed the theme in the other 2 Light in the Forest forums. They are pre-set themes, so they are far from perfect. Oh well.
Heard from a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time poster/observer the other day in a PM. I would reckon that this person dates back to 1997 here. Here is what this person had to say regarding the Lion's Den & my comments. Thought the words were worth repeating here:
Whoa...this place is a hornet's nest again.
Merry Christmas, Rich.
I know I don't qualify as a regular Board member anymore, but when you drop in from time to time, as I do, you sort of get a feel for the place in a way the regulars might not. It's similar to when you are the relative who lives out of town, comes for a visit, and notices that mom or dad has gone downhill before the others do.
NOT that the Board has gone down, just that it's not the same as it was, which isn't necessarily bad. I can't judge it, because I'm not able to participate at the level I once could.
One thing I've noticed, many of the posters need to be in fantasyland, which is fine. Mohicanland is a very special place, but politics, religion etc., bring out the differences, not the thing that binds, which is "Last of the Mohicans" the film. But, there's only so much talking that can be done about a film, no matter how much you love it. And, I do love it still!!!
When real life comes in to the Board, whether it relates to present day or something that happened 200 years ago, some get nasty, or intimidated. And so, I think politics and religion are better left out of the Board. The Lion's Den is an example. People who get upset by it, don't have the sense to stay away from it. Not that I don't have strong opinions, myself. It's just that, sometimes, you know you shouldn't go "there" with a friend, because you know it will lead to no good. I have friends I think are idiots politically. They have opinions based on absolutely nothing, and once I realize that, I never discuss politics with them again. We talk about other things instead. Message boards, on the other hand, are full of pseudo-friends, who may not have a thing in common in the real world, but relate in a narrow sense in cyberspace, and are easily upset.
I don't want to insult anyone on the Board, and so I'm writing this to you instead. If YOU think Mohicanland has outlived it's time, or isn't going in the direction YOU want, maybe you should close it down. It's yours. You gave a lot of folks a wonderful ride for a long time. But, you don't owe them anything. Do what you YOU want. You could always bring it back at a later time.
Whatever happens with the Board, Mohicanpress.com is an amazing site, stunning in it's comprehensiveness. Thanks for all you've done.
Regards, and M
