This humble Courier has just returned from the Land of the 2002 Great Mohican Gathering with several exciting bits of news:
1. I had an evening meal at Spirits On The River (by torchlight on their balcony...where our dinner and concert will take place...with the Swannanoa River whispering underneath and owls hooting in the trees just yards away) and preparations for the Gathering event are well underway! Those of you who forwarded your meal choices to me in a timely manner will have your meals ready and cooked to order when you arrive on the 20th. And in anticipation of our thirsty crowd, SOTR has added a fine selection of beer and wine to their menu (the beer and wine choices are being forwarded to Rich for posting)...no need to order in advance, as they are laying in a plentiful supply! SOTR is preparing displays of photos taken during the shooting of LOTM as well as souvenirs from the shoot and personal mementos from the cast, all for our viewing pleasure. The staff at SOTR also has a wealth of LOTM war stories to tell us...there was one about DDL and the Harley...well, you will just have to wait until the 20th!
2. SOTR can comfortably accomodate between 75 and 100 people, so in the event you did NOT sign up for the dinner and concert on time (today is the deadline)you may be out of luck. Bill Miller is quite popular in Western North Carolina and both SOTR and I have been beseiged with requests for tickets by non-Gatherers. At the end of today, all tickets not sold to Gatherers will be released for purchase by non-Gatherers...and once those are gone, the concert will be considered Sold Out, and no one else will be admitted to SOTR that evening.
3. I have acquired Bill Miller's lithograph "The Three Kings". It has been personally signed, framed, and will be offered in a special raffle the evening of June 20th, at the concert. We are requesting a donation of $1.00 per ticket...and ALL proceeds will benefit Ariel. (Rich, would you be so kind as to post the picture of "The Three Kings" I sent you? This technical stuff is way beyond my ken!)
4. While on my Courier rounds in Mohicanland, I drove up to the site of our First Annual Mohican Games and met with members of our host, The French Broad Muzzelloaders. The site is beautiful, and easy to find if you follow the handwritten map provided by the FBM (which will be in your Gathering packet). It is also an easy 20-30 minute drive from the Games site to SOTR. The big news to report: The FBM have volunteered to provide extra long rifles for those Gatherers who would like to compete but do not yet have their own weapons AND the FBM will have personnel on hand to teach the art of loading and firing a longrifle to all those potential Hawkeyes who would like to learn! So come early, select your rifle, learn to load and shoot, and then take part in our competition! Such a deal! The FBM are also going all out for us, providing range and scoring personnel, targets and a variety of cold drinks (at a nominal charge), as well as providing the site and shooting facilities. And why are they doing all of this? Because they too are excited about The Gathering, LOTM and most of all, by the opportunity to socialize with a group who recognize the value of a good longrifle! So, even if you don't plan on competing, come on over to watch the Games, and maybe try your hand at shooting or throwing the 'hawk. The more the merrier! And 18th century finery is MOST encourage for this event! And I might add that the prizes awarded during the Games will be most satisfactory (pictures will be posted shortly). In addition to all the handmade 18th century goods, including plenty wampum, the French brandy being offered arrived yesterday (having been "liberated" from Montcalm's private stock)and having tested it thoroughly I can pronounce it more than fit for Mohican consumption!
And that concludes my report. The 2002 Gathering just gets better and better...

For those of you who need to measure your wall space in anticipation of winning that lovely Bill Miller lithograph, the dimensions, with frame, are 33" x 29".

That is a GORGEOUS print! Ann, thanks so much for all your planning (and Courier runs) for what I am sure will be a treasured event at the Gathering. I was thrilled to hear that those of us who have yet to "grab ourselves a musket" can participate as well. I used to have quite a throwing arm back in the old fast pitch softball days, and was just bustin' to get a chance to throw a hawk!! Don't you laugh guys, I might surprise you!
On another note, Gadget Girl has tested and gauged and marked and measured and will be announcing this year's MUST-HAVE gadget either tonight or tomorrow. Stay Tuned!

Lady Ann,
I posted my thanks to you somewhere else on this here board, but methinks it makes more sense to add it under gathering gossip. As overseer of Ariel's Cabin and the silent auction, I thank you for your generous offer to give lithograph raffle proceeds to Ariel. As I mentioned before, you are a most genteel and kind Lady!
With grateful and sincere wishes, Jayne

Yes, Duncan-on-the-stake will be one of the many Mohican-related targets we expect you all to be blasting away at in your best Hawkeye fashion on June 20th. Don't forget that extra weaponry plus lessons in how to use it will be available at the competitions, courtesy of the French Broad Muzzelloaders. So after you have run up the cliffs ala Hawkeye and flung yourself off the cliffs ala Alice at Chimney Rock Park the morning of the 20th, come join us up in the mountains near Marshall in the afternoon for the Great Mohican Games...fun, frolic, longrifles, hawks, hard men, easy women (except for Ros...she's kinda scary!), fine prizes and much French brandy!

Dear Rich,
As long as we're talking about the Gathering sites...any word on how the Nolichucky River is running these days? In eastern Virginia, where I live, we're in the middle of a moderate drought. My husband and I made a trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains this past weekend, just east of Buena Vista, and all of the streams and rivers in that area are quite low. Unless the area around the Nolichucky has fared better in the rain department than we have, I think we stand a good chance of having a nice, leisurely "float" down the river!
I look forward to any news you can pass along on this subject.
See you next week!
Regards,
Diane B.

Yep ... according to our guide:
quote: The river was running 540 cfs yesterday. That is below the average mean flow; however, the people on our trip are having a good time. Talk to ya later

Hello, Everyone!
I can hardly believe it but just one week from today, at about this same time, we should have completed our opening day at Chimney Rock Park! Then it's on to the various competitions and, of course, an evening of fine food at Spirits on the River, and the Bill Miller concert!
I feel like a little kid, waiting for Christmas morning! Is everyone else as excited about this as I am?!

Hello All, I haven't been on the chatboard much. I'm trying to catch-up. Lot's of things happening here in Vermont. IBM layed off 988 people. I was one of the lucky ones who still has a job, even though I'll be doing something different. We've been getting tons of rain. Flooding, road closings....etc..... I'm ready for some sun! Jeff and I leave this Saturday for the drive down south. We'll stop here and there and enjoy the trip. So.. I won't be able to take part in your chat Saturday. This will be my 5th Gathering. I'm really looking forward to it and getting away from the turmoil here. Hmmm...about helpful hints to the new folks - if you stay at the Geneva remember they don't have clocks in the room. So be sure to bring your travel one. And... they don't have phones in the room. Other than that they're pretty nice. That's where we are staying. See you soon, Donna
